I have a history of exchanging with The Artist in Seine from my days as an active participant at IUOMA http://iuoma-network.ning.com
He sent me pieces of furniture. I sent objects back. I recall a trivet. His work was always conceptual and beautiful. It had the feel of a frenzied explosion of making that found the perfect balance in the end. He also had unique materials and a recognizable style.
By now you get the point that I am a lapsed mail artist but I still get wonderful mail from some of my correspondents – one day I will reply. That a piece from Dean graced my doormat is cause for celebration!
When I receive mail art I always begin thinking that the work is a secret communication that is ripe for decoding. There is lots of controversy about whether mail art should be decoded or can be. There is the dilemma about whether to see it as a piece of standalone art or something else: social commentary, an experimental voice, a response etc… Dean’s work always makes me think hard. Without a doubt it is standalone art, but equally I know there is a message!
The Ukraine Flag, the controversial censored Russian poet who spoke her mind. And there is my name. A story for me? A theatre, a scene from impressionism, the French art scene, the UK art scene, bananas. I am nuts for Dean’s work. Thank you!
